Madame De Pompadour (1721–1764), French mistress of Louis XV of France. Quoted in Mémoires de Madame du Hausset, p. 19 (1824).

Remark November 5, 1757, to Louis XV after the defeat of the French army by Frederick the Great at the Battle of Rossbach. The phrase has also been attributed to Louis XV, but in any case may already have been current as a proverb.
