Carol Moseley-Braun (b. 1947), African American politician. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, p. 17 (August 16, 1993).
Moseley-Braun, a United States Senator from Illinois, was recalling a conversation with Senator Jesse Helms, in the presence of Senator Orrin Hatch, in the Senate elevator. Helms, a longtime Senator from South Carolina, had a negative record on civil rights. Moseley-Braun, a staunch advocate of civil rights and other liberal causes, was new to the Senate. Helms's spokesman later characterized the encounter as "a good-natured exchange."
