On the decision made by the New York Times in the previous week to allow the use of the title "Ms.," as well as "Mrs." and "Miss," to designate women. For more than a decade, many feminists had objected to the practice of routinely designating women by their marital status, while designating men by the neutral "Mr." The Times, conservative in adopting new linguistic usage, had refused to use "Ms.."
