Said to a policeman after the bombing of Buckingham Palace by German planes. The East End—predominantly working-class—bore the brunt of the bombing during the blitz on London in World War II. When it was suggested that the royal family be evacuated, the Queen is reported to have said, "The children will not leave unless I do. I shall not leave unless their father does, and the King will not leave the country in any circumstances whatever."
