Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace! Where there is hatred let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
Saint Francis of Assisi (c.1182–1226), Italian friar, founder of the Franciscan Order. "Prayer of St Francis" (attributed).
This prayer for harmony was famously paraphrased by Mrs. Thatcher on the steps of 10 Downing Street, 4 May 1979, after her first election victory: "Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error may we bring truth. Where there is doubt may we bring faith. Where there is despair may we bring hope" (quoted in Hugo Young's biography One of Us, ch. 9, 1989).
