Nelly Sachs (1891–1970), German Jewish poet and translator; relocated to Sweden. "Bewitched is half of everything," lines 5-6, translated by Michael Hamburger, et al. (1967; first edition in German: 1957).

Sachs was cowinner of the 1966 Nobel Prize for Literature. A German Jew who escaped to Sweden in 1940, she was always keenly conscious of being a survivor of the Holocaust and an exile from her native land.
