Parody of a poem attributed to both G.W. Langford and David Bates, a Philadelphia broker. The poem appears in Bates's The Eolian (1849), including the following verse: "Speak gently to the little child! Its love be sure to gain; Teach it in accents soft and mild; It may not long remain."
