Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), British author, poet. Poem first published (1899). The White Man's Burden, The Five Nations (1903).

Addressed to the American people on the occasion of their occupation of the Philippines at the end of the Spanish-American War of 1898. The poem's title has become a euphemism for the kind of patriarchal imperialism then current.
