According to Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (16th ed., 1992) and Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (4th ed., 1992), this 19th-century song was adapted as a Baptist hymn by C. Albert Tindley in 1901, and revived in the 1940s by black tobacco workers in Charleston, S.C. The 1960s civil rights movement transformed it into an anthem.
