Leanza Corbett (b. c. 1973), U.S. beauty queen. As quoted in the New York Times, sect. 9, p. 12 (September 12, 1993).
The 1993 Miss America was referring to the rhinestone crown traditionally worn by Miss Americas. Corbett, a serious and thoughtful person, had spoken publicly in support of AIDS research and had argued successfully that Miss America contestants should henceforth fix their own hair and makeup rather than bringing along professional assistants. She made a practice of holding rather than wearing her crown; she did wear a small crown-shaped pin and a red ribbon signifying support for AIDS victims.
