The blood of Abraham, God's father of the chosen, still flows in the veins of Arab, Jew, and Christian, and too much of it has bee...n spilled in grasping for the inheritance of the revered patriarch in the Middle East. The spilled blood in the Holy Land still cries out to God--an anguished cry for peace.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Mac: We've gone to a heap of trouble not to have at least one hanging. Abraham Lincoln: Sure you have, Mac. And if these boys... had more than one life, I'd say go ahead. Maybe a little hangin' mightn't do 'em any harm. But the sort of hangin' you boys'd give 'em 'd be so, so permanent. Trouble is when men start takin' the law into their own hands they're just as apt in all the confusion and fun to start hangin' somebody who's not a murderer as somebody who is. And the next thing you know, they're hangin' one another just for fun, 'til it gets to a place a man can't pass a tree or look at a rope without feeling uneasy. We seem to lose our heads in times like this. We do things together that we'd be mighty ashamed to do by ourselves.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. Are they ministers of Christ? I... am talking like a madman -I am a better one: with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless floggings, and often near death. Five times I have received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked; for a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from bandits, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers and sisters; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, hungry and thirsty, often without food, cold and naked. And, besides other things, I am under daily pressure because of my anxiety for all the churches.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,... for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor ma...n named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Today brings the sad, glad tidings that Mrs. Abraham Lincoln has passed from that darkness which had fallen upon her path through ...this life, out into the light and joy of that life toward which her vision has so long been strained. Modern education is lethal to children.... We stuff them with mathematics, we pummel them with science, and we use them up before their time.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
When Abraham Lincoln penned the immortal emancipation proclamation he did not stop to inquire whether every man and every woman in... Southern slavery did or did not want to be free. Whether women do or do not wish to vote does not affect the question of their right to do so.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The Southern States are uneasy at the prospect of [Abraham] Lincoln's election today. The ultra South threatens disunion, and it n...ow looks as if South Carolina and possibly two or three others would go out of the Union. Will they? And if so, what is to be the result? Will other slave States gradually be drawn after them, or will the conservative States draw back into the Union or hold in the Union the ultra States? I think the latter. But at all events, I feel as if the time had come to test this question. If the threats are meant, then it is time the Union was dissolved or the traitors crushed out. I hope Lincoln goes in.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
