How can anyone be interested in war?--that glorious pursuit of annihilation with its ceremonious bellowings and trumpetings over t...he mangling of human bones and muscles and organs and eyes, its inconceivable agonies which could have been prevented by a few well- chosen, reasonable words. How, why, did this unnecessary business begin? Why does anyone want to read about it--this redundant human madness which men accept as inevitable?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I had a strong curiosity to be satisfied if he persisted in disbelieving a future state even when he had death before his eyes....... I asked him if the thought of annihilation never gave him any uneasiness. He said not the least.... "Well," said I, "Mr. Hume, I hope to triumph over you when I meet you in a future state; and remember you are not to pretend that you was joking with all this infidelity." "No, no," said he. "But I shall have been so long there before you come that it will be nothing new."LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
If only nature is real and if, in nature, only desire and destruction are legitimate, then, in that all humanity does not suffice ...to assuage the thirst for blood, the path of destruction must lead to universal annihilation.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Romantic love, in pornography as in life, is the mythic celebration of female negation. For a woman, love is defined as her willin...gness to submit to her own annihilation.... The proof of love is that she is willing to be destroyed by the one whom she loves, for his sake. For the woman, love is always self-sacrifice, the sacrifice of identity, will, and bodily integrity, in order to fulfill and redeem the masculinity of her lover.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
A beautiful sentence is beautiful, and a beautiful flower is beautiful, but their duration is nearly the same--a day, a century. N...othing dies more quickly than a style that is not supported by the solidity of strong thought. It shrivels up like a slackened hide; it falls in a heap like a rotten vine deprived of the tree it entwines. And if someone says that the vine keeps a tree with withered roots from falling down, I would agree. Style is also a force, but its value is that much more quickly diminished when it exhausts itself in preserving from annihilation the fragility which it embraces and sustains.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The only perfect love to be found on earth is not sexual love, which is riddled with hostility and insecurity, but the wordless co...mmitment of families, which takes as its model mother-love. This is not to say that fathers have no place, for father-love, with its driving for self-improvement and discipline, is also essential to survival, but that uncorrected father-love, father-love as it were practised by both parents, is a way to annihilation.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
My thoughts are crowded with death and it draws so oddly on the sexual... that I am confused confused to be attracted by, in effect, my own annihilation.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
We came to fear something more complicated than death, an annihilation less final but more complete, and we got out. Because ... w...e all knew that if you stayed too long you became one of those poor bastards who had to have a war on all the time, and where was that?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
We men know very little a priori, and have our senses to thank for nearly all our knowledge. Through experience we know only appea...rances ..., but not the modum noumenon ..., not things as they are in themselves.... God knows all things as they are in themselves a priori and immediately through an intuitive understanding.... If we were to flatter ourselves so much as to claim that we know the modum noumenon, then we would have to be in community with God so as to participate immediately in the divine ideas. To expect this in the present life is the business of mystics and theosophists. Thus arises the mystical self- annihilation of China, Tibet, and India, in which one is under the delusion that he will finally be dissolved in the Godhead. Fundamentally Spinozism could just as well be called a great fanaticism as a form of atheism. For of God, the one substance, Spinoza affirms two predicates: extension and thought. Every soul, he says, is only a modification of God's thought, and every body is a modification of his extension. Thus Spinoza assumed that everything existing could be found in God. But by making this assumption he fell into crude contradictions. For if only a single substance exists, then either I must be this substance, and consequently I must be God (but this contradicts my dependency); or else I am an accident (but this contradicts the concept of my ego, in which I think myself as an ultimate subject which is not the predicate of any other being).LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
