This is a Senate of equals, of men of individual honor and personal character, and of absolute independence. We know no masters, w...e acknowledge no dictators. This is a hall for mutual consultation and discussion; not an arena for the exhibition of champions.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
A new kind of woman with deep-rooted values is changing the way we live. Market researchers call it "neo-traditionalism." To us it...'s a woman who has found her identity in herself, her home, her family.... She is part of an extraordinary social movement that is profoundly changing the way Americans look at living--and the way products are marketed. The home is again the center of American life, oatmeal is back on the breakfast table, families are vacationing together, watching movies at home, playing Monopoly again. Even the perfume ads are suddenly glorifying commitment.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Nearby Bodie was a notoriously tough camp, where "a man for breakfast" was so frequent an occurrence that the phrase "bad man from... Bodie" was coined to describe those residents who were still in the land of the living. So impressive was its reputation for wickedness that once when an Aurora family considered moving to the town, the young daughter of the family finished her evening prayers with a tearful, "Goodbye, God, we're going to Bodie." Aurora ruffled whatever virtuous feathers it could muster and pointed scornfully. Bodie resentfully charged that the child has been deliberately misquoted--that what she had actually said was "Good! By God, we're going to Bodie"!LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
As soon as we are born, if we could but get up, bath, dress, shave, breakfast once for all, if we could 'cut' these monotonous cyc...les of routine. If the sun rose it would stay up, or once we were alive we were immortal!LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Dandyism is the last flicker of heroism in decadent ages.... Dandyism is a setting sun; like the declining star, it is magnificent..., without heat and full of melancholy. But alas! the rising tide of democracy, which spreads everywhere and reduces everything to the same level, is daily carrying away these last champions of human pride, and submerging, in the waters of oblivion, the last traces of these remarkable myrmidons.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Who has not wished that his host would come out frankly at the beginning of the visit and state, in no uncertain terms, the rules ...and preferences of the household in such matters as the breakfast hour? And who has not sounded out his guest to find out what he likes in the regulation of his diet and modus vivendi (mode of living)?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
You remind me of a child-friend who once wrote to tell me about her sister being married. "Now I will tell you all about Bessie's ...wedding." Then came a long account of bridesmaids, and breakfast, and everything else, except the name of the bride-groom! That of course didn't matter: the great thing was to get married somehow.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Writing ought either to be the manufacture of stories for which there is a market demand--a business as safe and commendable as ma...king soap or breakfast foods--or it should be an art, which is always a search for something for which there is no market demand, something new and untried, where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil,--to r...egard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than as a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of that.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
There is not enough exercise in this way of life. I try to make up by active gymnastics before I dress when I get up, by walking r...apidly in the lower hall and the greenhouse after each meal for perhaps five to ten minutes, and a good hand rubbing before going to bed. I eat moderately; drink one cup of coffee at breakfast and one cup of tea at lunch and no other stimulant. My health is now, and usually, excellent.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
