I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing, All alone stood it and the moss hung down from the branches,... Without any companion it grew there uttering joyous leaves of dark green, And its look, rude, unbending, lusty, made me think of myself, But I wonder'd how it could utter joyous leaves standing alone there without its friend near, for I knew I could not,LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In the East, it may be sufficiently symbolic to take an apartment three subway stops away from the family residence and proclaim i...ndependence. In the state of illusion and vast distances, establishing individuality may require leaving California. The young people of the East, rich and poor, are disciplined by the urban system in which they live. Trains have schedules. Buses stop at marked corners. Restaurants fill up at certain hours. Shops are open certain days, normally not on Sundays. California isn't like that. The young people of the West can almost shape their lives to suit, especially if they own a vehicle that can carry them anywhere at whim. California is home of the all-night market, Sunday shopping, and twenty-four-hour breakfasts in coffee shops. California is easy to rebel against because everything, including disaffection, is convenient. New York is not so easy.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

The rush to California ... and the attitude, not merely of merchants, but of philosophers and prophets, so called, in relation to ...it, reflect the greatest disgrace on mankind. That so many are ready to live by luck, and so get the means of commanding the labor of others less lucky, without contributing any value to society! And that is called enterprise! I know of no more startling development of the immorality of trade, and all the common modes of getting a living. The philosophy and poetry and religion of such a mankind are not worth the dust of a puffball. The hog that gets his living by rooting, stirring up the soil so, would be ashamed of such company. If I could command the wealth of all the worlds by lifting my finger, I would not pay such a price for it.... What a comment, what a satire, on our institutions! The conclusion will be, that mankind will hang itself upon a tree.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account... of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. Suffragists, hear this last call to a suffrage convention! The officers of the National American Woman Suffrage Association hereby call their State auxiliaries, through their elected delegates, to meet in annual convention at Chicago, Congress Hotel, February 12th to 18th, inclusive. In other days our members and friends have been summoned to annual conventions to disseminate the propaganda for their common cause, to cheer and encourage each other, to strengthen their organized influence, to counsel as to ways and means of insuring further progress. At this time they are called to rejoice that the struggle is over, the aim achieved and the women of the nation about to enter into the enjoyment of their hard-earned political liberty. Of all the conventions held within the past fifty-one years, this will prove the most momentous. Few people live to see the actual and final realization of hopes to which they have devoted their lives. That privilege is ours.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
