Now folks, I hereby declare the first church of Tombstone, which ain't got no name yet or no preacher either, officially dedicated.... Now I don't pretend to be no preacher, but I've read the Good Book from cover to cover and back again, and I nary found one word agin dancin'. So we'll commence by havin' a dad blasted good dance.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Soon, in all parts of our country, in each neglected village, or new settlement, the Christian female teacher will quietly take he...r station, collecting the ignorant children around her, teaching them habits of neatness, order and thrift; opening the book of knowledge, inspiring the principles of morality, and awakening the hope of immortality. Soon her influence in the village will create a demand for new laborers, and then she will summon from among her friends at home, the nurse for the young and sick, the seamstress and the mantuamaker; and these will prove her auxiliaries in good moral influence, and in sabbath school training. And often as the result of these labors, the Church will arise, and the minister of Christ be summoned to fill up the complement of domestic, moral and religious blessing.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
... no book ... ever competed with the Bible. The story of Ruth was better than Ramona, and the poetry of Job was better than Long...fellow. I still have my first big Bible, carefully underlined through with red and black ink, and interleafed [sic] with painfully written manuscript pages.... Margery and I earned our five cents a week for church and a penny for Sunday school by learning three verses of the Bible a day and six on Sunday. We learned dozens and dozens of chapters. I supposed "Evangeline" and "Hiawatha" were better poetry, but I didn't like them so well.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
When I was young ... there never was any question about right and wrong. We knew our catechism, and that was enough; we learned ou...r creed and our duty. Every respectable Church person had the same opinions. But, now if you speak out of the Prayer-book itself, you are liable to be contradicted.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Immorality, perversion, infidelity, cannibalism, etc., are unassailable by church and civic league if you dress them up in the tog...as and talliths of the Good Book.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The New Testament is an invaluable book, though I confess to having been slightly prejudiced against it in my very early days by t...he church and the Sabbath-school, so that it seemed, before I read it, to be the yellowest book in the catalogue. Yet I early escaped from their meshes. It is hard to get the commentaries out of one's head and taste its true flavor.... It would be a poor story to be prejudiced against the Life of Christ because the book has been edited by Christians. In fact, I love this book rarely, though it is a sort of castle in the air to me, which I am permitted to dream.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In the morning,... I ran over to the Church of La Bonne Ste. Anne, whose matin bell we had heard, it being Sunday morning. Our boo...k said that this church had "long been an object of interest, from the miraculous cures said to have been wrought on visitors to the shrine." There was a profusion of gilding, and I counted more than twenty-five crutches suspended on the walls, some for grown persons, some for children, which it was to be inferred so many sick had been able to dispense with; but they looked as if they had been made to order by the carpenter who made the church.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I understand that only the rich can be members of Dr. C---'s church. The Lord Christ, also, is therefore ineligible. I will remain... outside with Him.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
