Following publication of an advertisement of a "Barbacue & Ice" at Beauchamp's Springs, at which congressional candidates were to ...speak, the editor of the Houston Morning Star, of July 4, 1839, said: "(It will) not be an unfavorable opportunity for these gentlemen to express their true politics ... provided ... the liquors do not prove too powerful."LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The veto is a President's Constitutional right, given to him by the drafters of the Constitution because they wanted it as a check... against irresponsible Congressional action. The veto forces Congress to take another look at legislation that has been passed. I think this is a responsible tool for a president of the United States, and I have sought to use it responsibly.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I feel the desire to be with you all the time. Oh, an occasional absence of a week or two is a good thing to give one the happines...s of meeting again, but this living apart is in all ways bad. We have had our share of separate life during the four years of war. There is nothing in the small ambition of Congressional life, or in the gratified vanity which it sometimes affords, to compensate for separation from you. We must manage to live together hereafter. I can't stand this, and will not.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Yesterday the Electoral Commission decided not to go behind the papers filed with the Vice-President in the case of Florida.... I ...read the arguments in the Congressional Record and can't see how lawyers can differ on the question. But the decision is by a strictly party vote--eight Republicans against seven Democrats! It shows the strength of party ties.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The President has the authority to do a great deal in promoting a reform of the civil service. But the great mass of evils to be d...ealt with require means, time agents, the work of intelligent and able officers, none of which the President has unless they are furnished by Congress. As at present situated, the great evil is congressional patronage. This I have resisted as a usurpation of executive prerogatives, until now few Congressmen assert openly their claim to it. But they withhold from the Executive the means to get information from other sources than through Congressmen.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Now for civil service reform. Legislation must be prepared and executive rules and maxims. We must limit and narrow the area of pa...tronage. We must diminish the evils of office-seeking. We must stop interference of federal officers with elections. We must be relieved of congressional dictation as to appointments.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I've been aboard this destroyer for two weeks now, and we've already been through four air attacks. I'm in the war at last, Doc. I... caught up with that task force that passed me by. I'm glad to be here. I had to be here, I guess. But I'm thinking now of you, Doc, and you, Frank, and Dolan, and Dawdy, and Insignia, and everyone else on that bucket. All the guys everywhere who sailed from tedium to apathy and back again with an occasional sidetrip to monotony. This is a tough crew on here and they have a wonderful battle record. But I've discovered, Doc, that the unseen enemy of this war is the boredom that eventually becomes a faith and, therefore, a terrible sort of suicide. And I know now that the ones who refuse to surrender to it are the strongest of all. Right now, I'm looking at something that's hanging over my desk, a preposterous hunk of brass attached to the most bilious piece of ribbon I've ever seen. I'd rather have it than the Congressional Medal of Honor. It tells me what I'll always be proudest of, that at a time in the world when courage counted most, I lived among sixty-two brave men. So Doc, and especially you, Frank, don't let those guys down.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
My administration is pledged to follow the policies of Mr. Roosevelt in this regard, and while that pledge does not involve me in ...any obligation to carry them out unless I have Congressional authority to do so, it does require that I take every step and exert every legislative influence upon Congress to enact the legislation which shall best subserve the purposes indicated.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The return to solid values is always hard.... Distress, panic, and hard times have marked our pathway in returning to solid values....LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
