Men are not therefore put to death, or punished for that their theft proceedeth from election; but because it was noxious and cont...rary to men's preservation, and the punishment conducing to the preservation of the rest, inasmuch as to punish those that do voluntary hurt, and none else, frameth and maketh men's wills such as men would have them.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
This administration is going to be a compassionate administration. We believe in the Golden Rule of doing unto others as you would... have them do unto you.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Absolutely speaking, Do unto others as you would that they should do unto you is by no means a golden rule, but the best of curren...t silver. An honest man would have but little occasion for it. It is golden not to have any rule at all in such a case.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The more conscientious preachers, the Bible men, they who talk about principle, and doing to others as you would that they should ...do unto you,--how could they fail to recognize him, by far the greatest preacher of them all, with the Bible in his life and in his acts, the embodiment of principle, who actually carried out the golden rule? All whose moral sense had been aroused, who had a calling from on high to preach, sided with him. What confessions he extracted from the cold and conservative! It is remarkable, but on the whole it is well, that it did not prove the occasion for a new sect of Brownites being formed in our midst.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Everybody now seems to be talking about democracy. I don't understand this. As I think of it, democracy isn't like a Sunday suit t...o be brought out and worn only for parades. It's the kind of a life a decent man leads, it's something to live for and to die for.... Democracy means that people can say what they want to. All the people. It means that they can vote as they wish. All the people. It means that they can worship God in any way they feel right, and that includes Christians and Jews and voodoo doctors as well. It means that everybody should have a job, if he's willing to work, and an education, and the right to bring up his children without fear of the future. And it means that the old shall be provided for, without shame to themselves or to their families. It means do unto others as you would have others do unto you. It also means the prayers of the pilgrim fathers in the wilderness, and the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights, and the Emancipation Proclamation, and the dreams of an immigrant mother for her children. And that's what I believe in.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Unjust laws exist; shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or... shall we transgress them at once? Men generally, under such a government as this, think that they ought to wait until they have persuaded the majority to alter them. They think that, if they should resist, the remedy would be worse than the evil. But it is the fault of the government itself that the remedy is worse than the evil. It makes it worse. Why is it not more apt to anticipate and provide for reform? Why does it not cherish its wise minority? Why does it cry and resist before it is hurt? Why does it not encourage its citizens to be on the alert to point out its faults, and do better than it would have them? Why does it always crucify Christ, and excommunicate Copernicus and Luther, and pronounce Washington and Franklin rebels?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
