As we poled up a swift rapid for half a mile above Aboljacarmegus Falls, some of the party read their own marks on the huge logs w...hich lay piled up high and dry on the rocks on either hand, the relics probably of a jam which had taken place here in the Great Freshet in the spring. Many of these would have to wait for another freshet, perchance, if they lasted so long, before they could be got off. It was singular enough to meet with property of theirs which they had never seen, and where they had never been before, thus detained by freshets and rocks when on its way to them. Methinks that must be where all my property lies, cast up on the rocks on some distant and unexplored stream, and waiting for an unheard-of freshet to fetch it down. O make haste, ye gods, with your winds and rains, and start the jam before it rots!LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Across the lonely beach we flit, One little sandpiper and I;... And fast I gather, bit by bit, The scattered driftwood, bleached and dry. The wild waves reach their hands for it, The wild wind raves, the tide runs high, As up and down the beach we flit-- One little sandpiper and I.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

The houses are from five to seven feet high, and all built upon one arbitrary plan--the ungraceful form of a dry-goods box. The si...des are daubed with a smooth white plaster, and tastefully frescoed aloft and alow with disks of camel-dung placed there to dry. This gives the edifice the romantic appearance of having been riddled with cannon-balls, and imparts to it a very pleasing effect. When the artist has arranged his materials with an eye to just proportion--the small and the large flakes in alternate rows, and separated by carefully-considered intervals--I know of nothing more cheerful to look upon than a spirited Syrian fresco. Nothing in this world has such a charm for me as to stand and gaze for hours and hours upon the inspired works of these old masters.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Haggerty: Girls! Girls! Girls! Be careful of my hats. Chorus Girl: Well, we gotta get down on the stage.... Haggerty: I don't care. I won't allow you to ruin them. Dressing Room Matron: See, I told you. They were too high and too wide. Haggerty: Well, Big Woman, I designed the costumes for the show, not the doors for the theater. Dressing Room Matron: I know that. If you had, they'd have been done in lavender.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
