Trade and commerce, if they were not made of India-rubber, would never manage to bounce over the obstacles which legislators are c...ontinually putting in their way; and, if one were to judge these men wholly by the effects of their actions and not partly by their intentions, they would deserve to be classed and punished with those mischievous persons who put obstructions on the railroads.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
He carried no change of clothing, but putting on a stout, thick jacket, which he laid aside in the canoe, and seizing a full-sized... axe, his gun and ammunition, and a blanket, which would do for a sail or knapsack, if wanted, and strapping on his belt, which contained a large sheath-knife, he walked off at once, ready to be gone all summer. This looked very independent; a few simple and effective tools, and no india-rubber clothing. He was always the first ready to start in the morning, and if it had not held some of our property, would not have been obliged to roll up his blanket.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
India is an abstraction.... India is no more a political personality than Europe. India is a geographical term. It is no more a un...ited nation than the Equator.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The prosecution of [Warren] Hastings, though he should escape at last, must have good effect. It will alarm the servants of the Co...mpany in India, that they may not always plunder with impunity, but that there may be a retrospect; and it will show them that even bribes of diamonds to the Crown may not secure them from prosecution.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
All that is necessary to do with this drink is to place it in an open saucer on the window sill and inhale deeply from across the ...room. In about eight seconds the top of the inhaler's head rises slowly and in a dignified manner until it reaches the ceiling where it floats, bumping gently up and down. The teeth then drop out and arrange themselves on the floor to spell "Portage High School, 1930" the eyes roll upward and backward, and a strange odor of burning rubber fills the room.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The master plan was laid out months ago. Jack Kemp would give 200 rubber-chicken dinners (sometimes it's meatballs or just cocktai...ls) between Jan. 1, 1995, and Jan. l, 1996. What the plan did not say was that he would be expected to deliver the same lines, ingratiate himself to political hangers-on and, most humiliating of all, beg them for money.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Kitchens were different then, too--not only what came out of them, but their smells and sounds. A hot pie cooling smells different... from a frozen pie thawing. Oilcloth and linoleum and apples in an open bowl and ruffled rubber aprons make a different aromatic mix from Formica and ceramic tile and mangoes in an acrylic fruit ripener and plastic-coated aprons printed with "Who invited all these tacky people?" And the kitchen sounds. I am not sure that today's kitchen is noisier. But the noises are different. Today you get the song of the food processor and the blender, the intermittent hum of the reefer and the freezer, the buzz-slosh-and-grunt of the dishwasher, the violently audible digestive processes of the waste disposal in the sink. Then it was the whir and clatter of the hand-powered eggbeater, the thunk-thunk-thunk of somebody mashing potatoes, or, in green-pea season, the crisp pop of pea pod and the rattle-rattle-rattle of peas into the pan.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
