I wouldn't be above brainwashing your child about which shows you think are good and which you think are just awful. Nor would I h...esitate to enlighten a child about products that are advertised on TV. If you watch a commercial with your child, say to him, "Remember when we saw that toy at the store and it was just a piece of junk? You can't always tell when you see it on TV, because there are ways of filming it at different angles to make it look bigger and more powerful. Keep that in mind when you think you want all those toys they advertise."LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
What stunned me was the regular assertion that feminists were "anti-family." . . . It was motherhood that got me into the movement... in the first place. I became an activist after recognizing how excruciatingly personal the political was to me and my sons. It was the women's movement that put self-esteem back into "just a housewife," rescuing our intelligence from the junk pile of "instinct" and making it human, deliberate, powerful.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
As a mother I am often confused about how to help my children make wise decisions for themselves. One day I extol the virtues of a... free and open education and the next I tell them they can't watch TV until they finish their homework. One day I tell them to eat what they like, their bodies know intuitively what they need; and the next I say, "Okay, that's it--no more junk food in this house!" I flounder like this because I have no training and very little support for this work and there are days when I'm the one who needs the parenting, even more than they do.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Like other colonial peoples, adolescents are economically dependent on the dominant society, and appear in its accounts as the ben...eficiaries of its philanthropy. Like them also, adolescents are partly dependent because of their immature stage of development, but even more because of restrictions placed upon them by the dominant society.... Nevertheless, "teen-agers" do have money.... They scrounge it from home or earn it at odd times, and this, too, contributes to their colonial status. The "teen-age" market is big business. We all share an economic interest in the dependency of the "teen-ager." The school is interested in keeping him off the streets and in custody. Labor is interested in keeping him off the labor market. Business and industry are interested in seeing that his tastes become fads and in selling him specialized junk that a more mature taste would reject. Like a dependent native, the "teen-ager" is encouraged to be economically irresponsible because his sources of income are undependable and do not derive from his personal qualities.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Democracy with its semi-civilization sincerely cherishes junk. The artist's power should be spiritual. But the power of the majori...ty is material. When these worlds meet occasionally, it is pure coincidence.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
It was a time when only the dead smiled, happy in their peace.... ... Stars of Death stood over us, and innocent Russia squirmed under the bloody boots, under the wheels of black Marias.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I always get back to the question, is it really necessary that men should consume so much of their bodily and mental energies in t...he machinery of civilised life? The world seems to me to do much of its toil for that which is not in any sense bread. Again, does not the latent feeling that much of their striving is to no purpose tend to infuse large quantities of sham into men's work?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I wasn't born to be a fighter. I was born with a gentle nature, a flexible character and an organism as equilibrated as it is judg...ed hysterical. I shouldn't have been forced to fight constantly and ferociously. The causes I have fought for have invariably been causes that should have been gained by a delicate suggestion. Since they never were, I made myself into a fighter.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
