It is a sort of ranger service. Arnold's expedition is a daily experience with these settlers. They can prove that they were out a...t almost any time; and I think that all the first generation of them deserve a pension more than any that went to the Mexican war.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The objections which have been brought against a standing army, and they are many and weighty, and deserve to prevail, may also at... last be brought against a standing government. The standing army is only an arm of the standing government. The government itself, which is only the mode which people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it. Witness the present Mexican war, the work of comparatively a few individuals using the standing government as their tool; for, in the outset, the people would not have consented to this measure.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
If I wrote at all, I must throw myself headlong into the great political maelstrom, and would of course be swallowed up like a fis...hing-boat in the great Norway horror which decorated our school geographies; for no woman had ever done such a thing, and I could never again hold up my head under the burden of shame and disgrace which would be heaped upon me. Just imagine for a moment what life in this country might have been if women had been properly represented in Congress. Would a Co...ngress where women in all their diversity were represented tolerate the countless laws now on the books that discriminate against women in all phases of their lives? Would a Congress with adequate representation of women have allowed this country to reach the 1970s without a national health care system? Would it have permitted this country to rank fourteenth in infant mortality among the developed nations of the world? Would it have allowed the situation we now have in which thousands of kids grow up without decent care because their working mothers have no place to leave them? Would such a Congress condone the continued butchering of young girls and mothers in amateur abortion mills? Would it allow fraudulent packaging and cheating of consumers in supermarkets, department stores and other retail outlets? Would it consent to the perverted sense of priorities that has dominated our government for decades, where billions have been appropriated for war while our human needs as a people have been neglected?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
