If I could summarize my suggestions to parents over the past twenty-five years it would be: worry less, criticize less, preach les...s, listen more, have more fun, be more honest with your own feelings, develop your own joys and friendships, and don't sweat the small stuff (which is nearly everything). The goal is not to be a perfect parent, because no such thing exists. The hope is to be a good enough parent so that your child leaves home a responsible adult who can take care of him or herself.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Of thee (kind boy) I ask no red and white to make up my delight,... no odd becoming graces, Black eyes, or little know-not-whats, in faces; Make me but mad enough, give me good store Of Love, for her I Court I ask no more, 'Tis love in love that makes the sport.
There is no such thing as a value-free concept of deviance; to say homosexuals are deviant because they are a statistical minority... is, in practice, to stigmatize them. Nuns are rarely classed as deviants for the same reason, although if they obey their vows they clearly differ very significantly from the great majority of people.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The general doctrine about knowledge which I sketched at the beginning of this section, which is the real bugbear underlying doctr...ines of the kind we have been discussing, is radically and in principle misconceived. [It] would be a mistake in principle to suppose that the same thing could be done for knowledge in general. And this is because there could be no general answer to the questions what is evidence for what, what is certain, what is doubtful, what needs or does not need evidence, can or can't be verified. If the Theory of Knowledge consists in finding grounds for such an answer, there is no such thing.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In matters of usage there are two extremes. At the extreme right are the purists, the standpatters, the rigid traditionalists who ...brook little or no change and who go by the rules--as many rules as they can recall or invent. They may not speak or write brilliantly, but they are grammatically unassailable--except when they forget some rule or misinterpret one.... At the extreme left are the permissivists, the heretics who argue that there is no such thing as "correct" usage. They maintain that usage is what people say, but they neglect to disclose what people they are talking about--most people in general or most intelligent people or most educated people or most writing people or what. Oddly enough, despite the loose approach of the permissivists, who have made some headway in the schools, there is evidence that people do crave authority in matters of language, they do ask for rules and rulings. They do not seem to appreciate the freedom that the permissivists are so eager to bestow upon them.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Films and gramophone records, music, books and buildings show clearly how vigorously a man's life and work go on after his "death,..." whether we feel it or not, whether we are aware of the individual names or not.... There is no such thing as death according to our view!LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I can never get people to understand that poetry is the expression of excited passion, and that there is no such thing as a life o...f passion any more than a continuous earthquake, or an eternal fever. Besides, who would ever shave themselves in such a state?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
