A man's indebtedness ... is not virtue; his repayment is. Virtue begins when he dedicates himself actively to the job of gratitude....LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Plantin' and readin', plantin' and readin'. Fill a man full of lead, stick 'em in the ground, and then read words on 'em. Why when... ya killed a man, why try to read the Lord in as a partner on the job.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
They [parents] can help the children work out schedules for homework, play, and television that minimize the conflicts involved in... what to do first. They can offer moral support and encouragement to persist, to try again, to struggle for understanding and mastery. And they can share a child's pleasure in mastery and accomplishment. But they must not do the job for the children.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
"Have we any control over being born?," my friend asked in despair. "No, the job is done for us while we're sleeping, so to speak,... and when we wake up everything is all set. We merely appear, like an ornate celebrity wheeled out in a wheelchair." "I don't remember," my friend claimed. "No need to," I said: "what need have us free-loaders for any special alertness? We're done for."LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

More than ten million women march to work every morning side by side with the men. Steadily the importance of women is gaining not... only in the routine tasks of industry but in executive responsibility. Women constitute a part of our industrial achievement.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
--I am the resurrection and the life. That touches a man's inmost heart. --It does, Mr Bloom said.... Your heart perhaps but what price the fellow in the six feet by two with his toes to the daisies? No touching that. Seat of the affections. Broken heart. A pump after all, pumping thousands of gallons of blood every day. One fine day it gets bunged up: and there you are. Lots of them lying around here: lungs, hearts, livers. Old rusty pumps: damn the thing else. The resurrection and the life. Once you are dead you are dead. That last day idea. Knocking them all up out of their graves. Come forth, Lazarus! And he came fifth and lost the job. Get up! Last day! Then every fellow mousing around for his liver and his lights and the rest of his traps. Find damn all of himself that morning.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
There is a terrific disadvantage in not having the abrasive quality of the press applied to you daily.... Even though we never lik...e it, and even though we wish they didn't write it, and even though we disapprove, there isn't any doubt that we could not do the job at all in a free society without a very, very active press.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
One difference between humans and computers lies in the relative strengths in their respective abilities to understand symbolic re...lationships and to learn facts. A computer can remember billions of facts with extreme precision, whereas we are hard pressed to remember more than a handful of phone numbers. On the other hand, we can read a novel and understand and manipulate the subtle relationships between the characters--something that computers have yet to demonstrate an ability to do. We often use our ability to understand and recall relationships as an aid in remembering simple things, as when we remember names by means of our past associations with each name and when we remember phone numbers in terms of geometric or numeric patterns they make. We thus use a very complex process to accomplish a very simple task, but it is the only process we have for the job. Computers have been weak in their ability to understand and process information that contains abstractions and complex webs of relationships, but they are improving.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
