I was asked to-night why I refuse to have truck with intellectuals after business hours. But of course I won't. 1. I am not an int...ellectual. Two minutes' talk with Aldous Huxley, William Glock, or any of the New Statesman crowd would expose me utterly. 2. I am too tired after my day's work to man the intellectual palisade. 3. When my work is finished I want to eat, drink, smoke, and relax. 4. I don't know very much, but what I do know I know better than anybody, and I don't want to argue about it. I know what I think about an actor or an actress, and am not interested in what anybody else thinks. My mind is not a bed to be made and re-made.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The work of an intellectual is not to mould the political will of others; it is, through the analyses that he does in his own fiel...d, to re-examine evidence and assumptions, to shake up habitual ways of working and thinking, to dissipate conventional familiarities, to re-evaluate rules and institutions and ... to participate in the formation of a political will (where he has his role as citizen to play).LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Intelligence is an excellence of mind that is employed within a fairly narrow, immediate and predictable range; it is a manipulati...ve, adjustive, unfailingly practical quality--one of the most eminent and endearing of the animal virtues. Intelligence works within the framework of limited but clearly stated goals, and may be quick to shear away questions of thought that do not seem to help in reaching them. Finally, it is of such universal use that it can daily be seen at work and admired alike by simple or complex minds. Intellect, on the other hand, is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of mind. Whereas intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, adjust, intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes, imagines. Intelligence will seize the immediate meaning in a situation and evaluate it. Intellect evaluates evaluations, and looks for the meanings of situations as a whole.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Europe is so well gardened that it resembles a work of art, a scientific theory, a neat metaphysical system. Man has re-created Eu...rope in his own image.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In literary representation, the distinction between the genuinely erotic and the licentious is a distinction not of subject-matter..., but of perspective. The genuinely erotic work is one which invites the reader to re-create in imagination the first-person point of view of someone party to an erotic encounter. The pornographic work retains as a rule the third-person perspective of the voyeuristic observer.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Some carpenters were at work here mending a scow on the green and sloping bank. The strokes of their mallets echoed from shore to ...shore, and up and down the river, and their tools gleamed in the sun a quarter of a mile from us, and we realized that boat-building was as ancient and honorable an art as agriculture, and that there might be a naval as well as a pastoral life. The whole history of commerce was made manifest in that scow turned bottom upward on the shore. Thus did men begin to go down upon the sea in ships; quaeque diu steterant in montibus altis, Fluctibus ignotis insultav[e]re carinae; "and keels which had long stood on high mountains careered insultingly (insultav[e]re) over unknown waves."LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Having achieved political liberty for women this organization pledges itself to make an end to the subjection of women in all its ...remaining forms. Among our tasks we emphasize these: 1. To remove all barriers of law or custom or regulation which prevent women from holding public office--the highest as well as the lowest--from entering into and succeeding in any profession, from going into or getting on in any business, from practicing any trade of joining the union of her trade. 2. So to remake the marriage laws and so to modify public opinion that the status of the woman whose chosen work is homemaking shall no longer be that of the dependent entitled to her board and keep in return for her services, but that of a full partner. 3. To rid the country of all laws which deny women access to scientific information concerning the limitation of families. 4. To re-write the laws of divorce, of inheritance, of the guardianship of children, and the laws for the regulation of sexual morality and disease, on a basis of equality, equal rights, equal responsibilities, equal standards. 5. To legitimatize [sic] all children. 6. To establish a liberal endowment of motherhood.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
When I started out as a nurse I did so with the highest ideals.... But I found that steady work in my profession--like every woman...'s work in the world--depended upon the giving of myself.... Two-thirds of the physicians I met made a nurse's virtue the price of their influence in getting her steady work. Is it any wonder that I determined to become a member of this privileged sex, if possible?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
