[Rutherford B. Hayes] was a patriotic citizen, a lover of the flag and of our free institutions, an industrious and conscientious ...civil officer, a soldier of dauntless courage, a loyal comrade and friend, a sympathetic and helpful neighbor, and the honored head of a happy Christian home. He has steadily grown in the public esteem, and the impartial historian will not fail to recognize the conscientiousness, the manliness, and the courage that so strongly characterized his whole public career.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
My wish for the American woman is that she may always be an elevating influence--man's inspiration. Let him go forth to duty while... she weaves the spell which makes home a paradise to which he may return, ever welcome, whether he is victor or vanquished.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Have been reading "Genesis" several Sundays, not as a Christian reads for "spiritual consolation," "instruction," etc., not as an ...infidel reads to carp and quarrel and criticize, but as one who wishes to be informed and furnished in the earliest and most wonderful of all literary productions. The literature of the Bible should be studied as one studies Shakespeare, for illustration and language, for its true pictures of man and woman nature, for its early historical record.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I feel the desire to be with you all the time. Oh, an occasional absence of a week or two is a good thing to give one the happines...s of meeting again, but this living apart is in all ways bad. We have had our share of separate life during the four years of war. There is nothing in the small ambition of Congressional life, or in the gratified vanity which it sometimes affords, to compensate for separation from you. We must manage to live together hereafter. I can't stand this, and will not.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I feel that you will not only be the making of my happiness, but also of my fortunes or success in life. The truth is I never did ...half try to be anything, or do anything. There was no motive ... and so I have lived, not an idle, but a useless sort of life. Hereafter I hope all that will be quite changed.... I shall have purpose and steadiness to keep ever doing, looking to your happiness and approval as my best reward.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Coming in, I was denounced as a fraud by all the extreme men of the opposing party, and as an ingrate and a traitor by the same cl...ass of men in my own party. Going out, I have the good will, blessings, and approval of the best people of all parties and sections.... I had a strong and comforting faith that I should be able to organize and conduct an Administration which would satisfy and win the country. This faith never deserted me. I had it before either the election or the nomination. Doubtless it was founded on my experience. I have often said that I never fail to gain the confidence and friendship of those I wish to win, if I have time and an opportunity to do so.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Is this not true--That in proportion to the value of their estates the extremely wealthy pay far less taxes than those of moderate... means? Compare the amount paid by millionaires with the amount paid by ordinary citizens. I believe that in proportion to their estates they pay less than half as much as ordinary citizens, whereas they ought to pay more.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Is there anything in which the people of this age and country differ more from those of other lands and former times than in this-...-their ability to preserve order and protect rights without the aid of government? ... We are realizing the paradox, "that country is governed best which is governed least." I no longer fear lynch law. Let the people be intelligent and good, and I am not sure but their impulsive, instinctive verdicts and sentences and executions, unchecked by the rules and technicalities of law, are more likely to be according to substantial justice than the decisions of courts and juries.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
