I realized people would soon forget me once I was dead. I couldn't even say that this was hard to stomach; really, there's no idea... to which one doesn't get acclimatized in time.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
A new kind of award has been added--the deathbed award. It is not an award of any kind. Either the recipient has not acted at all,... or was not nominated, or did not win the award the last few times around. It is intended to relieve the guilty conscience of the Academy members and save face in front of the public. The Academy has the horrible taste to have a star, choking with emotion, present this deathbed award so that there can be no doubt in anybody's mind why the award is so hurriedly given. Lucky is the actor who is too sick to watch the proceedings on television.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Just as I gave the command to charge I felt a stunning blow and found a musket ball had struck my left arm just above the elbow. F...earing that an artery might be cut, I asked a soldier near me to tie my handkerchief above the wound. I soon felt weak, faint, and sick at the stomach. I laid down and was pretty comfortable ... [but] seeing something going wrong and feeling a little easier, I got up and began to give directions about things; but after a few moments, getting very weak, I again laid down. While I was lying down I had considerable talk with a wounded [Confederate] soldier lying near me. I gave him messages for my wife and friends in case I should not get up. We were right friendly and jolly; it was by no means an unpleasant experience.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Within Western medicine, physically ill people approach medical helpers in a manner much different from the psychologically ill. P...hysically ill people bring sick bodies to physicians; emotionally ill people bring sick souls to psychotherapists. Differences in these two forms of helping are visible even in the language; the person in need of medical help is always a "patient," while the person in need of psychotherapy is often a "client." Each form of helping has a particular way of approaching the person needing help. Medical patients are treated, taken care of, and made better by the doctor. Psychotherapy clients must be actively engaged in their healing.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
And what have you laymen made of hell? A kind of penal servitude for eternity, on the lines of your convict prisons on earth, to w...hich you condemn in advance all the wretched felons your police have hunted from the beginning--"enemies of society," as you call them. You're kind enough to include the blasphemers and the profane. What proud or reasonable man could stomach such a notion of God's justice? And when you find that notion inconvenient it's easy enough for you to put it on one side.... Hell is not to love any more, madame. Not to love any more!LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Whoever sincerely believes that elevated and distant goals are as little use to man as a cow, that "all of our problems" come from... such goals, is left to eat, drink, sleep, or, when he gets sick of that, to run up to a chest and smash his forehead on its corner.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
If originally it was not good for a man to be alone, it is much worse for a sick man to be so; he thinks too much of his distemper..., and magnifies it.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
