I have not carried out experiments to prove it, but may I suggest that people in the theater and the cinema do not sit in the same... way? The theater requires attentiveness, and people must sit up alertly to see what is often a small area of concentration. Whereas in the cinema, the screen looms above us, and many people sink into reclining positions to watch. Some luxurious movie houses have seats that slide back to allow this posture. In the cinema we sometimes put our feet on the back of the row in front, loll across two seats, and damage the upholstery. Would this happen with a lively and commanding presence on the stage, or is it the result of a sort of loneliness in cinemas?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Setting out on our return to the river, still at an early hour in the day, we decided to follow the course of the torrent.... This... ravine had been the scene of an extraordinary freshet in the spring, accompanied by a slide from the mountain.... At one place we were startled by seeing, on a little sandy shelf by the side of the stream, the fresh print of a man's foot, and for a moment realized how Robinson Crusoe felt in a similar case; but at last we remembered that we had struck this stream on our way up, though we could not have told where, and one had descended into the ravine for a drink.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
There are many persons ready to do what is right because in their hearts they know it is right. But they hesitate, waiting for the... other fellow to make the first move--and he, in turn, waits for you. The minute a person whose word means a great deal dares to take the open- hearted and courageous way, many others follow. Not everyone can be turned aside from meanness and hatred, but the great majority of Americans is heading in that direction. I have a great belief in the future of my people and my country.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Not to find one's way in a city may well be uninteresting and banal. It requires ignorance--nothing more. But to lose oneself in a... city--as one loses oneself in a forest--that calls for a quite different schooling. Then, signboard and street names, passers-by, roofs, kiosks, or bars must speak to the wanderer like a cracking twig under his feet in the forest.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
To get a man soundly saved it is not enough to put on him a pair of new breeches, to give him regular work, or even to give him a ...University education. These things are all outside a man, and if the inside remains unchanged you have wasted your labour. You must in some way or other graft upon the man's nature a new nature, which has in it the element of the Divine.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Religion means goal and way, politics implies end and means. The political end is recognizable by the fact that it may be attained...--in success--and its attainment is historically recorded. The religious goal remains, even in man's highest experiences, that which simply provides direction on the mortal way; it never enters into historical consummation.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Theorists may say what they like about a man's children being a continuation of his own identity, but it will generally be found t...hat those who talk in this way have no children of their own. Practical family men know better.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Families have always been in flux and often in crisis; they have never lived up to nostalgic notions about "the way things used to... be." But that doesn't mean the malaise and anxiety people feel about modern families are delusions, that everything would be fine if we would only realize that the past was not all it's cracked up to be. . . . Even if things were not always right in families of the past, it seems clear that some things have newly gone wrong.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
