When I started out as a nurse I did so with the highest ideals.... But I found that steady work in my profession--like every woman...'s work in the world--depended upon the giving of myself.... Two-thirds of the physicians I met made a nurse's virtue the price of their influence in getting her steady work. Is it any wonder that I determined to become a member of this privileged sex, if possible?LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

Our kids will develop a work ethic only if we require them to pay a portion of the cost of some of the things they want. They'll l...earn to defer gratification the moment we stop routinely pulling out our wallets. And they'll learn self-discipline only if we care enough to enforce reasonable limits.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Mothers and others who work with children each have their own special expertise; each has something to contribute to a child's wel...l-being. The opinion of each needs to be respected. Together they can work more effectively on behalf of the child. It is not that one is right, the other wrong, that one is good, the other bad. There are no certain answers and all the information available is needed. It is time to stop looking for a villain--and it is certainly time to stop casting mothers in that role.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
They'll always be looking for us. They won't stop till we die. I don't care. Just so they find us together. If you're thinking of ...anyone else, don't. It wouldn't work. You're no good for anyone but me. You're no good and neither am I. That's why we deserve each other.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Racism is when you have laws set up, systematically put in a way to keep people from advancing, to stop the advancement of a peopl...e. Black people have never had the power to enforce racism, and so this is something that white America is going to have to work out themselves. If they decide they want to stop it, curtail it, or to do the right thing ... then it will be done, but not until then.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

When children are physically hurting each other, we can't let them "work it out themselves." Just as we stop a child from touching... a hot stove or running in the street, we need to protect one child from the other--for the sake of both.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Men seem to flip around the television more than women. Men get that remote control in their hands, they don't even know what the ...hell they're not watching. You know we just keep going, "Rerun, that's stupid, he's stupid, go, go, go." "What are you watching?" "I don't care, I gotta keep going." "Who was that?" "I don't know what it was, doesn't matter, it's not your fault. I gotta keep going." "I think that's a documentary on your father." "Don't care, what else is on?" Women don't do this. Women will stop and go, "Well let me see what the show is, before I change the channel. Maybe we can nurture it, work with it, help it grow into something." Men don't do that. Because women nest and men hunt. That's why we watch TV differently.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
I was once reproved by a minister who was driving a poor beast to some meeting-house horse-sheds among the hills of New Hampshire,... because I was bending my steps to a mountain-top on the Sabbath, instead of a church, when I would have gone farther than he to hear a true word spoken on that or any day. He declared that I was "breaking the Lord's fourth commandment," and proceeded to enumerate, in a sepulchral tone, the disasters which had befallen him whenever he had done any ordinary work on the Sabbath. He really thought that a god was on the watch to trip up those men who followed any secular work on this day, and did not see that it was the evil conscience of the workers that did it. The country is full of this superstition, so that when one enters a village, the church, not only really but from association, is the ugliest looking building in it, because it is the one in which human nature stoops the lowest and is most disgraced. Certainly, such temples as these shall ere long cease to deform the landscape. There are few things more disheartening and disgusting than when you are walking the streets of a strange village on the Sabbath, to hear a preacher shouting like a boatswain in a gale of wind, and thus harshly profaning the quiet atmosphere of the day. You fancy him to have taken off his coat, as when men are about to do hot and dirty work.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
