There was about all the Romans a heroic tone peculiar to ancient life. Their virtues were great and noble, and these virtues made ...them great and noble. They possessed a natural majesty that was not put on and taken off at pleasure, as was that of certain eastern monarchs when they put on or took off their garments of Tyrian dye. Notwithstanding the universal barrenness, and the contiguity of the desert, I never saw an autumnal landscape so beautifully paint...ed as this was. It was like the richest rug imaginable spread over an uneven surface; no damask nor velvet, nor Tyrian dye or stuffs, nor the work of any loom, could ever match it. I verily believe that the great good which has been effected in the world by Christianity has been largely counteracted by the pes...tilent doctrine on which all the Churches have insisted, that honest disbelief in their more less astonishing creeds is a moral offense, indeed a sin of the deepest dye, deserving and involving the same future retribution as murder and robbery. If we could only see, in one view, the torrents of hypocrisy and cruelty, the lies, the slaughter, the violations of every obligation of humanity, which have flowed from this source along the course of the history of Christian nations, our worst imaginations of Hell would pale beside the vision.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
