The revolution must end and the republic must begin. In our constitution, right must take the place of duty, welfare that of virtu...e, and self-defense that of punishment. Everyone must be able to prevail and to live according to one's own nature.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Political correctness is the natural continuum from the party line. What we are seeing once again is a self-appointed group of vig...ilantes imposing their views on others. It is a heritage of communism, but they don't seem to see this.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
As a mode of perception that often becomes a style of life, paranoia weaves around the vulnerable self or group an air-tight metap...hysic and world view. Paranoia is an antireligious mysticism based on the feeling or perception that the world in general, and others in particular, are against me or us. Reality is perceived as hostile. By contrast, the religious mystic experiences the ground of being as basically friendly to the deepest needs of the self. That which is unknown, strange, or beyond our comprehension is with and for rather than against us.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In the middle-class United States, a veneer of "alternative lifestyles" disguises the reality that, here as everywhere, women's ap...parent "choices" whether or not to have children are still dependent on the far from neutral will of male legislators, jurists, a male medical and pharmaceutical profession, well-financed lobbies, including the prelates of the Catholic Church, and the political reality that women do not as yet have self-determination over our bodies and still live mostly in ignorance of our authentic physicality, our possible choices, our eroticism itself.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »

There are good points about all such wars. People forget self. The virtues of magnanimity, courage, patriotism, etc., etc., are ca...lled into life. People are more generous, more sympathetic, better, than when engaged in the more selfish pursuits of peace.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Nearly all the bands are mustered out of service; ours therefore is a novelty. We marched a few miles yesterday on a road where tr...oops have not before marched. It was funny to see the children. I saw our boys running after the music in many a group of clean, bright-looking, excited little fellows.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Animal liberationists do not minimize the obvious differences between most members of our species and members of other species. Th...e rights to vote, freedom of speech, freedom of worship--none of these can apply to other animals. Similarly, what harms humans may cause much less harm, or even no harm at all, to some ani mals. If I were to confine a herd of cows within the boundaries of the county of, say, Devon, I do not think I would be doing them any harm at all; if, on the other hand, I were to take a group of people and restrict them to the same county, I am sure many would protest that I had harmed them considerably, even if they were allowed to bring their families and friends.... Hence to deny humans the right to travel outside Devon would be to restrict their rights significantly; it would not be a significant restriction of the rights of cows.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Stripped of incidental ornaments, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are seen as the same dream dreamed twice over, the second time a...s nightmare; though, to be sure, the terror of the second dream is already at work in the first, whose euphoria persists strangely into the second. In both books, there is a pretended, a quasi-ritual death to the community and its moral codes; though in Tom Sawyer that death is a "lark" undertaken in childish pique, while in Huckleberry Finn it is a last desperate evasion, an act of self-defense. In both, there is a consequent spying on the community from cover to watch the effects of that death, the aftermath of regret: the childish dream of the suicide, who longs to be present at his own discovery, come true. In the one case, however, the spying is a prelude to a triumphant return, a revelation, in the other, to a further flight and concealment.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
