The formation of an oppositional world view is necessary for feminist struggle. This means that the world we have most intimately ...known, the world in which we feel "safe" ... must be radically changed. Perhaps it is the knowledge that everyone must change, not just those we label enemies or oppressors, that has so far served to check our revolutionary impulses.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
In baseball there are generalists, who keep their eye on the ball and see the big picture; football is full of special-duty charac...ters who are very limited in terms of their range but have depth. Baseball represents America before the frontier ended, when there was plenty of space and plenty of time, and philosophic anarchists roamed around on verdant fields "doing their thing" with a free and reckless abandon. The game is relaxing and not particularly taxing on the players, who play many times each week. Football is tremendously difficult on the players and is so tiring that sixty minutes of clock time--which amounts to several hours of real time--exhausts them. Baseball developed when we thought nature was a limitless reservoir and we would always live in abundance. Football reflects a different world view; everything has to be fought for, resources are precious, hostile people (guards, monster men) are everywhere and in such a world you have to grab what you can.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
The creation of a world view is the work of a generation rather than of an individual, but we each of us, for better or for worse,... add our brick to the edifice.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
If we are to change our world view, images have to change. The artist now has a very important job to do. He's not a little periph...eral figure entertaining rich people, he's really needed.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
As a mode of perception that often becomes a style of life, paranoia weaves around the vulnerable self or group an air-tight metap...hysic and world view. Paranoia is an antireligious mysticism based on the feeling or perception that the world in general, and others in particular, are against me or us. Reality is perceived as hostile. By contrast, the religious mystic experiences the ground of being as basically friendly to the deepest needs of the self. That which is unknown, strange, or beyond our comprehension is with and for rather than against us.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
If theology is an effort to construct a rational and systematic view of life out of the various and sometimes contradictory myths ...which are associated with a single religious tradition, philosophy carries the process one step further by seeking to dispense with the mythical basis altogether and resting its world-view entirely upon the ground of rational consistency. Thus for Hegel, religion is no more than primitive philosophy in terms of crude picture-thinking, which a more advanced rationality refines. This rationalization of myth is indeed inevitable and necessary, lest religion be destroyed by undisciplined and fantastic imagery or primitive and inconsistent myth. Faith must feed on reason. (Unamuno.) But reason must also feed on faith. Every authentic religious myth contains paradoxes of the relation between the finite and the eternal which cannot be completely rationalized without destroying the genius of true religion.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Here are a couple of generalisations about England that would be accepted by almost all observers. One is that the English are not... gifted artistically. They are not as musical as the Germans or Italians, painting and sculpture have never flourished in England as they have in France. Another is that, as Europeans go, the English are not intellectual. They have a horror of abstract thought, they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic "world view." Nor is this because they are "practical," as they are so fond of claiming for themselves. One has only to look at their methods of town-planning and water-supply, their obstinate clinging to everything that is out-of-date and a nuisance, a spelling system that defies analysis and a system of weights and measures that is intelligible only to compilers of arithmetic books, to see how little they care about mere efficiency.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
To become a token woman--whether you win the Nobel Prize or merely get tenure at the cost of denying your sisters--is to become so...mething less than a man ... since men are loyal at least to their own world-view, their laws of brotherhood and self-interest.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
Technology as the knack of eliminating the world as resistance,... the technologist's worldlessness.... My mistake lay in the fact... that we technologists try to live without death.LESSATTRIBUTION DETAIL »
